The journey through 150 Harley Street

Please note we are currently consulting at 121 Harley Street

How do you get an appointment at 121 Harley Street? There are many reasons why people come for a consultation at 121 Harley Street and various methods of referral.

Most commonly, your GP will recommend you see one of our consultants and send us a referral letter requesting we contact you.  Alternatively you may have been recommended to a particular doctor by a friend in which case call us to book an appointment directly.  You may have found us on the internet, using a search engine or even have found us through recommendation of a hospital and if you come for cosmetic reasons, you may have seen one of our consultants advertise in a magazine.

Whatever the route or reason for your visit, we follow the same formula when making appointments.

We will offer you the first available appointment with the doctor if you ask for him/her by name.  We run cancellation lists for all the doctors, so if the appointment seems a long time ahead, don’t worry unduly as there is a good chance you will be offered an earlier appointment following a cancellation.  If your problem is urgent, you are bleeding, in pain or have infection we will suggest you see the first available doctor.

All our doctors are specialist ENT surgeons, but each has an area of additional expertise.  Professor Tony Wright and Mr John Graham excel in the more complicated ear and hearing related problems.  Mr East and Miss Badia in complex nose and sinus problems, and both are also accomplished cosmetic surgeons in facial plastics as well as the application of botulinum and fillers.  Mr Tony Aymat undertakes the full range of ear, nose and throat conditions and also deals with swallowing and snoring problems .  Please look for further information on all our consultants’ specialties in meet the team.

How do you find us?  When you make the appointment, we will make sure you know to come to the Regents Park end of Harley Street and that Regents Park is the nearest tube station.  Baker Street and Great Portland Street are close too, but we try to direct you away from Oxford Circus and Bond Street, and not just because of the temptation of all the shops but because Harley Street is a very long road and the walk from Bond Street will take you approximately 20 minutes.

How will you pay for your consultation?  If you have medical insurance you will first need to ensure you contact your insurance company to gain authorisation for your consultation and bring the authorisation reference number plus your policy number with you on the day.  If we do not have this information we may not be able to invoice your insurer directly so you will have to settle the bill and claim reimbursement.  If you are not insured then payment must be made on the day and we are happy to quote you the current consultation and test fees prior to attending the appointment.  Also see our website for current charges.  Payment on the day can be made by cheque, cash, debit and credit card.

What happens if you miss or cancel your appointment?  If you haven’t been to 150 before we will endeavour to remind you the day before that your appointment is due.  But if your plans change, you feel well again, you see another doctor or even have another more urgent appointment, PLEASE let us know as early as possible and preferably giving 24 hours notice.  We do understand that things happen but if appointments are missed without good reason there will be a cancellation fee levied of half the consultation fee as we always have a list of people waiting to fill a slot.

What happens when you arrive for your appointment?  Please ring the bell marked “Patients” and when you hear the buzzer push to enter and wait at reception desk where Judy or Dee our receptionists will welcome you, mark you off as having arrived and if it is your first visit, ask you to fill in a new patient registration form before you see your consultant.  You will then be shown to our waiting room.  We have magazines to read and spring water available for patients to drink but no tea or coffee facilities.

Do consultations always run to time?  We do try to run to time and occasionally you may be seen early but sadly sometimes appointments do run over so please allow extra time in case of delay both for yourself and your parking meter.  In return, we do understand that sometimes people are held up by traffic or public transport problems and do our best to reschedule your appointment time a little if you are able to warn us of the problem.

What to expect at consultation? The first time you see a consultant is a new patient appointment for which a maximum of 45 minutes is allowed, in order that your consultant can take a history and perform any necessary diagnostic examinations before suggesting a treatment.  After this you may need a follow up consultation, which you can book on your way out or by telephone at a later date.  If you are not insured it is also important that you settle your account before leaving.  A follow up appointment last between 15 to 30 minutes.

How can you get more information and queries answered?  Each Consultant has a dedicated secretary who should be your first port of call, however every member of the support staff will endeavour to assist you with general queries or appointments.

What if you need to have an operation?  If your consultant advises surgery, if not urgent, it is best you choose a time that is convenient and allows for sufficient post-operative recovery time.  This should be discussed with your consultant.  The secretary or reception staff will book a mutually convenient slot in the diary and you will be given a estimate with regard to the cost and information that will be important to you gaining authorisation from your insurer if applicable.  Your consultant’s secretary will make the booking and will send you admission details and preoperative information.  If you have any queries regarding your admission do not hesitate to call the secretary who is there to help you.

For more pressing problems or if you do wish to make a comment on our service or a complaint regarding any aspect then please call or write to Sharon Nelson who is our Practice Manager who will help to solve the problem.

What happens on the day of an operation? You will have been advised beforehand of how long you should fast from food and drink pre-operatively and what time you should arrive at the hospital.  On admission the hospital staff will book you in then take you up to your room where you will be asked medical question and general health checks will be made by your anaesthetist prior to going to the operating theatre.  Normally you will be admitted on the day of the operation and spend one night in hospital with discharge the following morning.  In some instances a longer hospital stay may be advised.  Please talk to your consultant about this.

What happens after the operation?  Once discharged you will need to have arranged for someone to pick you up and take you home where you should rest after your surgery.  You should expect to attend a post operative consultation at 150 Harley Street one or two week’s later, dependant on the procedure you have had.  Your consultant will advise you and the secretary or reception staff will make you an appointment.

If you need to contact the doctor after an operation, or between appointments, you can do this through the secretary by telephone or email.  Your message or query will be relayed to your consultant, who may then ring you directly, or via the secretary.

If there is an emergency at the weekend or during the night, please go immediately to your nearest Accident and Emergency department or call an ambulance, as we are unable to provide emergency out of hours cover.
