Michael Oko

Mr Oko is a consultant ENT surgeon with a special interest and expertise in sleep apnoea and other sleeping disorders. He qualified in 1986 and trained at St Mary’s & Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital in London. He was a lecturer at the University of Glasgow in ENT surgery and was one of the 12 finalists in 1995 for the Surgeon in Training medal -organised by The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh- for instrument design and innovation. In 2005 he was appointed as a consultant surgeon for ENT for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (ULHT) & Clinical Lead for Sleep Apnoea Service, and served as Clinical Lead for General Surgery 2009-20011and Clinical Lead for ENT for ULHT from 2007 to 2011.

Mr Oko founded the Snoring Disorders Centre based at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston in 2006, and has since opened satellite clinics at Johnson Hospital, Spalding, and 150 Harley Street. In 2008 Mr Oko’s pioneering sleep service at ULHT won the NHS East Midlands Healthcare Award for service transformation.  In 2011 he won the Middle East Hospitals award for Respiratory excellence for raising awareness of Sleep Apnoea in the region and this was presented by Riz Kahn.

Mr Oko actively campaigns for better research and facilities for sufferers of sleeping disorders, including the risks associated with undiagnosed sleep apnoea.

Mr Oko is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, The European Respiratory Society, the  British Association of Otolaryngology the British Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine.

Patient satisfaction

All Mr Oko’s patients complete an anonymous patient satisfaction survey after their consultation in order to monitor his performance and drive service improvements. On average 96% of patients are very satisfied with the service they received across five categories (understanding, explanations, friendliness, politeness, listening).

In his latest 360° clinical assessment Mr Oko received a top rating from a sample of patients across 11 categories of patient satisfaction. Mr Oko also scored well above the national average in his assessment by colleagues at ULHT.
